The american cancer society
Founded in New York City in 1913, The American Cancer Society changed the face of cancer. At that time, having cancer meant a diagnosis of death, and doctors would often not tell their patients and patients would often not tell their families and friends. The American Cancer Society was founded in order to educate people that it is not something to be ashamed of. They knew they had to raise public awareness about cancer if progress was to be possible. Through journals and magazines, the founders, over 15 physicians and business leaders, published information about cancer and hired physicians throughout the United States to educate people about cancer.
The American Cancer Society has contributed to almost every cancer-related breakthrough since the society began. They've supplied over $3.6 billion to cancer research and have discovered the link between smoking and cancer, and its scientists have pioneered the use of treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. They provide access to healthcare, and have provided events to fund research such as Relay for Life or DetermiNation, both events raise money, and promote exercise and education about how to prevent cancer.
In the United states alone, there are over 12 million survivors thanks to the American Cancer Society. In both eras, they established the fight against this deadly disease, that it is nothing to be ashamed of and has paved the way for future discoveries and breakthroughs to help prevent and cure it. With their help, over 350 lives a day are spared that would otherwise be taken due to cancer. It is no longer a mystery, and is now a very widely known medical condition to the public. "We won't rest until we expand that progress so that no one - in the U.S. or around the world - will ever lose another birthday to cancer."
